horgenglarus’ classic 1-380 wooden chair is a Swiss design icon. In 2018 horgenglarus decided to add a high-legged version who’s design, materials and look match those of the classic 1-380, but the seating is 80 cm heigh. After two years of working on drafts, models and prototypes, the perfect big brother was ready in September 2018—the 11-380 bar stool. It has all the characteristics that make the classic 1-380 unmistakable: a round seat frame deformed from one piece, elegantly curved hind legs made from one piece, diagonal front legs and a tilted backrest with its typical rounded silhouette. The challenge was to modify the geometry of the individual components in such a way that they adapt to the ergonomic requirements of a bar stool while visibly maintaining its proximate relationship with the classic 1-380. As a new element, a ring made from edged chrome-nickel flat steel or black powder-coated steel was added to interlink the legs and trace the seat frame’s geometry. The steel ring on its own is used as a foot rest; from a structural point of view, it is not needed because the highly stressable alliance of seat frame and legs is fully sufficient even for greater seating heights.
Naturally, the 11-380 bar stool shares all the quality characteristics distinguishing its smaller sister the chair classic 1-380: the use of beech wood, a renewable material; the design’s clarity and elegance; the precise manufacturing of the craftsmanship. Available in beech and oak timbers in many different colours.

In the mid-1920s, ag möbelfabrik horgenglarus began collaborating with external architects and designers - a success story that continues to this day. The driving force at the time was Ernst Kadler-Vögeli, the head technician and later director. Without the expertise and material-technical skills of the company's own development department, such cooperation would not have been possible; the bentwood process in particular required a high degree of skill. However, the majority of the furniture program continued to consist of factory designs or factory models that were created without the involvement of external designers. These include anonymous icons such as the chair created around 1918, which is known today as classic 1-380.
